A tragic surfer was found floating face down in the water after being mauled to death by a shark at a netted beach. The man, believed to be in his 50s, had been riding the waves at Greenmount Beach on Australia's Gold Coast when he was killed by the predator.
Just before 5pm local time the surfer was bitten on the leg. Emergency crews rushed to the popular tourist spot and paramedics treated the man on the shore but he could not be saved.
Beaches both north and south of Greenmount Beach were immediately closed after the attack. Lifeguards evacuated other swimmers from the water and attempted to help the man before paramedics arrived.
