South Korea's president Yoon Suk Yeol has declared martial law in the country following fears of a new attack from Kim Jong-un.
Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing as he vowed to "eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order." As reported by the Mirror, he declared the step as critical for defending the country's constitutional order.
It wasn't clear how the steps would affect the country's governance and democracy. The president also accused the country's opposition of sympathising with North Korea, controlling the parliament, and paralysing the government with anti-state activities.Following the news police clashed with protesters in front of the main gate of the National Assembly in Seoul.
Pictures showed officers attempting to hold back people trying to enter the building.Since taking office in 2022, Yoon has struggled to push his agenda against an opposition-controlled parliament.
