Sophie Ellis Bextor reveals she turned down opportunity to be a Eurovision judge

Eurovision judge, but decided to turn the offer down due to the show’s ‘kooky’ rules.The singer told the Radio Times that she was given the opportunity to be a judge for the song contest in 2019 as each country has a jury of industry professionals.Despite being a Eurovision fan, the 47-year-old declined the offer as she wouldn’t have been able to bring her baby with her, despite the fact she was still feeding at the time.That wasn’t the only thing which put off the Murder On The Dancefloor singer.

Judges are not allowed to speak during the performances, and Sophie decided she couldn’t watch the show in silence.Speaking to the Radio Times, she said: “I had a very small baby that I was still feeding, and they wouldn’t let me bring it along.“I’m pretty sure the baby would have been impartial but, you know what, I think part of what I like about Eurovision is that it has very much got its rules… it’s kooky.

We weren’t going to be allowed to speak while we were watching it either, and I thought, ‘I can’t watch Eurovision in silence.’ ”Sophie gave birth to her fifth child, a son named Mickey in January 2019.She has four other sons with her husband Richard Jones; Sonny born in 2004, Kit born in 2009, Ray born in 2012 and Jesse born in 2015.During the song contest the jury members for each country judge the acts on their vocals, song composition and their overall impression.These votes count for 50 per cent of the country's overall scores, with the public making up for the other half of the votes.This year’s Eurovision final is being held in the Italian city of Turin, after the country won last year with the band Måneskin.Sam Ryder will be performing for the UK this year with his song Spaceman.
