Martin Bashir’s reputation lay in tatters on Thursday night after Lord Dyson’s inquiry found he had lied and deceived his way into securing his explosive interview with Diana.
The investigation found that the former Panorama journalist used “deceitful behaviour” in “serious breach” of the BBC’s guidelines.
Bashir’s shocking tactics included showing faked bank statements to Diana’s brother Earl Spencer in a bid to falsely suggest a number of close aides were being paid to leak secrets.
The Earl told the inquiry he had recorded detailed notes of meetings with Bashir handed to the probe. He believed Bashir’s claims aimed to heighten Diana’s paranoia about who she could trust – thus making her keen to tell her side of the story in a TV
