Scottish councils are due to get direct funding from the UK Treasury in a Brexit move by Rishi Sunak that will turn Wednesday’s Budget into a financial weapon against the SNP’s independence campaign.
Several local authorities in Scotland are expected to receive funding for special projects from the chancellor when he opens the red budget box in the Commons.
The direct financing will come via the Internal Market and UK Levelling Up funds which leaves the Wesminster Government in charge of replacement cash for previous EU schemes which the Scottish government administered.
The move will infuriate the SNP who claim the Tories are using Brexit funding to deliberately bypass the Scottish Parliament and trample on the devolved settlement.
