Lawyers acting for Prince Andrew are demanding to quiz his accuser Virginia Giuffre’s psychologist after suggesting she may be suffering from “false memories”.

The move, which emerged in legal documents filed late on Friday, comes in the wake of the Duke of York’s car crash Newsnight interview in which he claimed to “have no recollection” of meeting Giuffre. His account astonished the show’s interviewer Emily Maitliss, who pointed out there appeared to be a photograph showing him with his arm around Giuffre’s waist taken in paedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s London apartment. The latest strategy was quickly criticised by Giuffre’s legal team, who described it as a “typical tactic” used in historic sexual abuse cases, and one Ghislaine Maxwell had used at her trial. The duke’s lawyers, who also want to grill Giuffre’s husband, revealed they intend to interview therapist Dr Judith Lightfoot on “theory of false memories” as well as matters discussed during their sessions and any prescriptions she has written for her.

They aim to inspect documents, including the doctor’s notes from all sessions with Giuffre, who claims Andrew, 61, had sex with her three times when she was aged 17 in 2001.US lawyer Spencer Kuvin last night said: “A false memories defence is a typical move in these historical sex abuse cases.“It is the very same tactic that Ghislaine Maxwell used in her trial and it failed.

I fully expect it to fail again in this case.”Andrew’s US lawyer Andrew Brettler lodged the requests in New York 24 hours after the Queen had summoned her second son to Windsor Castle and stripped him of all his royal and military titles. The prince, who was yesterday pictured driving with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson by his side, denies the allegations
