Premier League clubs have been left “shocked” and put in a “difficult financial position” by a warning social distancing could last until the end of the year.
Brighton chief exec Paul Barber says advice from the Government's Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty was a “huge” concern, as football plots a route back to playing, and avoiding financial meltdown.
It could mean there are no crowds allowed at games until next year, with clubs from the top flight and down the pyramid taking a crippling cash hit.
Like many clubs, Brighton have asked their playing squad to take a wage deferral or cut because their “income has stopped overnight”, and skipper Glenn Murray is leading the talks.
