Police called to disturbance at south Manchester home... it ended in tragedy

A man has admitted killing his housemate during a disturbance at their home. Stephen Owusu, 22, killed 42-year-old Thomas Murphy at a property on Beverly Road in Fallowfield.

Owusu was due to go on trial at Manchester Crown Court next week accused of murder. He denied murder but instead pleaded guilty to manslaughter, on the grounds of diminished responsibility, at a hearing at the same court this morning. (Weds) Prosecutors said Owusu's guilty plea was acceptable following reports into his mental health, and that they would not pursue a trial on the murder allegation.

Further details surrounding the killing have not yet been disclosed. A judge scheduled Owusu's sentencing hearing for October. "Stephen Owusu, you have pleaded guilty to the offence of unlawful killing, an extremely serious offence," Judge John Potter told him. "I must consider what the appropriate sentence should be in your case.
