Music mogul Russell Simmons is opening up about the sexual assault allegations brought against him in the HBO documentary “On the Record.” The documentary gives first-hand accounts of rape claims made against Russell by multiple women, allegations that he has repeatedly denied.In an interview with the Breakfast Club, Russell talks about how he felt when he heard the accounts of these women. “I could never say that someone doesn’t feel victimized,” Russell Simmons said. “Thirty years ago…these stories are 25 to 40 years old.

The digital release of the documentary On The Record has been set by Dogwoof for later this month. The film comes from Oscar-nominated filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering and recounts the experiences of several female employees at Def Jam Records in the 1990s and exposes the consequences of speaking out publicly and going on the record about their experiences of sexual harassment. The film had its premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. It will land in the UK on-demand on 26th of June.

Director Kirby Dick and producing partner/co-director Amy Ziering have spent the better part of the last decade deeply involved in exposing areas of American society where sexual assault runs rampant. They have the mechanics of the rape culture procedural doc down to a science, yet nothing in their films feels formulaic.

In December 2017, two months after sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein came to light, former music industry executive Drew Dixon went public with her story accusing hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons of rape. When the documentary On The Record, which recounts her story and decision to come forward, debuts May 27 on HBO Max, it lands at a different moment on the #MeToo trajectory.

HBO Max has gone live today, after seven months of anticipation.

Drew Dixon, 50, is one of the central voices who appears in HBO Max’s new powerful documentary, On The Record. The former Def Jam executive is one of several women to have publicly accused hip-hop music pioneer, Russell Simmons, 62, of sexual assault. Dixon first told her account of the alleged 1995 incident to The New York Times in December 2017. “I was broken,” she told the newspaper, alleging that Simmons raped her in his Manhattan apartment. Dixon has also accused legendary music exec L.A. Reid of sexually harassing her when they both worked at Arista Records.
