Tom Welling is headed back to The CW!

Joe Otterson TV Reporter The “Poltergeist” television series in development at Amazon MGM Studios has taken a step forward. Variety has learned exclusively that Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson have boarded the project as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. The series was previously reported to be in early development in October 2023.

The Supernatural franchise is coming to end — at least for now — as The Winchesters has not been able to get a second season anywhere. Producing studio Warner Bros. Television’s efforts to set up the Supernatural prequel series at another network or streaming platform following its cancellation by the CW have been unsuccessful. All possible avenues have been exhausted, and the search for a new home has come to an end, despite a strong #SaveTheWinchesters campaign led by series executive producer (and Supernatural star) Jensen Ackles.

“Looks like we got work to do,” writes The Winchesters executive producer and narrator Jensen Ackles on Twitter Thursday. Ackles has taken to social media in an effort mobilize Supernatural fans on a campaign to find the canceled Supernatural prequela new home.

The story is told from Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) perspective, marking the first return of Ackles’ character since the series finale in November of 2020.

The CW has opted not to pick up a second season of The Winchesters. The news is not surprising; the Supernatural prequel was among the long-shot renewal prospects at the network under its new ownership as it focuses on unscripted and lower-cost scripted programming (primarily international acquisitions/co-productions) in pursuit of profitability.

The Winchesters premieres Tuesday, October 11 on the CW.
