Addie Morfoot Contributor Don’t expect any drive-inscreenings, virtual screenings, mask mandates or reduced capacity theaters at the 30th annual Hamptons Intl. Film Festival. This year’s edition will look and feel as it did way back in 2019. The Long Island-based fest, which runs Oct. 7-16, will screen 69 feature films and 51 shorts that are 54% female-directed and represent 34 countries from around the world. Also back at HIFF are a bevy of fancy cocktail hours and the fest’s Rowdy Talks series, which will include a conversation with director, screenwriter and producer Chris Columbus.

Ellise Shafer Emmy winner Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) and Tony nominee Kate Fleetwood (Broadway’s “Macbeth”) have joined Ewan McGregor in the West End play “My Master Builder.” David Ajala (“Star Trek: Discovery”) and Mirren Mack (“Sex Education”) round out the cast of Lila Raicek’s work based on Henrik Ibsen’s 1892 play “The Master Builder.” Directed by Michael Grandage, who also co-produces with MarketStall and Seaview, “My Master Builder” opens on April 29 at Wyndham’s Theatre. “On the eve of July 4th in the Hamptons, Elena Solness, a publishing magnate, is preparing to throw a party to celebrate her architect husband, Henry Solness, as he unveils his latest masterpiece,” the play’s synopsis reads. “Their already vulnerable union is shattered by the unexpected arrival of Mathilde, a former student of Henry’s, with whom he previously shared an intimate connection.

Actress Sophiya Haque was famed for portraying Poppy Morales in Coronation Street, with the star having appeared in the ITV soap from 2008 until 2009. Ewan McGregor has signed on to tread the boards for the first time in 17 years with a remake of Henrik Ibsen’s 1892 play The Master Builder. 

Ellise Shafer Ewan McGregor is returning to the West End for the first time in 17 years to lead the company of Lila Raicek’s new play “My Master Builder,” inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s 1892 work. The show reunites the “Star Wars” and “Moulin Rouge” actor with director Michael Grandage, who he previously worked with on the Donmar Warehouse productions of “Othello” and “Guys and Dolls.” The production starts previews on April 17 at Wyndham’s Theatre before officially opening on April 29, and will run until July 12.

No, Emma Corrin was not going to talk about their “My Policeman” co-star Harry Styles. Perhaps I should have been more forceful in my questioning, but…no.

Amazon Studios is moving forward with an awards push for director Michael Grandage’s romantic drama “My Policeman,” despite mixed reviews out of the Toronto Film Festival, where it received an ensemble tribute. Variety has learned exclusively that Amazon will be submitting the entire cast, which includes music superstar Harry Styles and Emmy nominee Emma Corrin, all in the supporting categories for Oscar consideration. Going between younger and older versions of the three main characters over a 40-year span, the British drama tells the story of Tom (Styles and Linus Roache), Marion (Corrin and Gina McKee) and Patrick (David Dawson and Rupert Everett) and how events from their past affect their future when reunited.

EJ Panaligan editor NewFest, a New York-based LGBTQ+ film festival, has announced the full lineup for its 34th iteration. The 2022 edition will run from Oct. 13 to Oct. 25. With world, North American, U.S. and New York premieres for more than 130 films from 23 countries, the festival will be headlined by the world premiere of HBO documentary “Mama’s Boy” from Laurent Bouzereau as the opening night screening. Additionally, the festival will hold an advance screening for the Season 2 premiere of popular HBO series “The White Lotus.” Other high-profile screenings through the festival’s run include Michael Grandage’s love triangle film “My Policeman,” starring Harry Styles and Emma Corrin, and the stop-motion horror comedy “Wendell & Wild,” from writer-director Henry Selick. Jordan Peele co-writes, while also featuring in a lead voice role. Keegan-Michael Key inhabits the film’s other lead voice role, marking a “Key & Peele” reunion on the animated stage between the two longtime collaborators.

On a break from his Madison Square Garden residency, and shortly after the Don’t Worry Darling Venice Film Festival world premiere, Harry Styles hit Toronto as his Amazon Studios Prime Video feature drama, My Policeman, made its world premiere and to a great standing ovation at the Princess of Wales Theatre.

Harry Styles has finally debuted his dramatic chops, charming the Toronto International Film Festival at the world premiere of “My Policeman.”An emotional, decade-spanning drama about a 1950s cop juggling an idealistic wife and a secret male lover, Styles turned up with his costars Emma Corrin and David Dobson to unveil the long-awaited project.The company of actors and their director, Michael Grandage, received a standing ovation at Toronto’s Princess of Wales theater following the Sunday night premiere. Applause was cut short thanks to Styles’ schedule — the singer had to catch a plane immediately after the screening to resume his world tour.At a brief Q&A, Styles discussed how he and his costars built an authentic bond as on-screen friends, and navigated some soul- and body-baring love scenes with both. “Having a base of a real friendship outside of the characters … it doesn’t require much acting. In the more intense scenes, there’s a lot of trust and safety there,” he said.

My Policeman, which had its World Premiere today at the Toronto International Film Festival, has its roots  in a novel by Bethan Roberts  which was actually based on a complicated love relationship between famed novelist E.M. Forster (A Room With A View, Howard’s End, Maurice), his male lover of 40 years, a policeman named Bob Buckingham, and Buckingham’s wife May Hockey who slowly came to realize her husband had a long standing affair with Forster, but even after he had suffered a series of strokes took care of the author in his later life so deep was their friendship. Roberts changed  the names and fictionalized it all for her book which is now the basis of Ron Nyswaner’s (Philadelphia) screenplay which explores the love triangle of three freewheeling friends in 1957 who each was hobbled by the mores of the time, repressing rather than expressing their own sexuality, even as the sexual desires and confusion hit a boiling point.

Beginning as a young soldier in Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” (2017), he returns to the silver screen with two films this year. In the first, he’s the charming husband to Florence Pugh in “Don’t Worry Darling,” with the press tour that keeps on giving. In the second, he portrays a closeted gay police officer in Michael Grandage’s drama “My Policeman” from Amazon Studios, featuring his strongest turn yet as an actor. But is an Oscar nomination in his future? Singers-turned-actors have had an inconsistent road to the Academy Awards. While there are successes such as Cher (“Moonstruck”) and Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”), Academy voters sometimes make actors prove themselves for a while to show they’re the real deal. Known as a “pretty boy,” Styles’ celebrity status does present an obstacle to overcome with awards voters. As Tom, the internalized conflict that Styles conveys is executed effectively, and if he decides to campaign and make a play for his first Oscar nomination, it will have to begin with Amazon choosing to submit him for supporting actor attention – which is not category fraud.

Harry Styles isn’t letting recent film festival dramas keep him away from the scene as he popped up at Toronto International Film Festival this weekend to promote his upcoming movie My Policeman. It was only last week that the As It Was singer was bizarrely accused of spitting in the lap of his Don’t Worry Darling co-star Chris Pine at Venice Film Festival, thanks to a viral clip that sparked a thousand theories. Pine’s rep rubbished the claims while Harry himself joked about the controversy at a show on his Love On Tour stint. With the spitgate drama now somewhat behind him, the pop star can now focus on promoting his other new movie, My Policeman, which received one of its first screenings at TIFF on Sunday. Harry, 28, attended the film’s press conference alongside co-stars Emma Corrin, Rupert Everett, David Dawson and director Michael Grandage in Ontario. During the event, the former One Direction star opened up about how he got into the mind of playing a repressed gay character. ‘I think he’s very curious,’ Styles said in a clip obtained by Variety. ‘I think he’s someone who is born into a very small world and, if you’re born into that kind of environment, you feel like you know where the edge of the world is. ‘Slowly throughout the story, I think he’s realising that it is a little further away than Brighton.

Fresh from a tumultuous Venice and a Madison Garden concert in between, Harry Styles was back on the festival circuit this weekend for the Toronto world premiere of Michael Grandage’s My Policeman.
