Courteeners, English Teacher, Louis Tomlinson honoured at first ever Northern Music Awards

Courteeners, English Teacher and Louis Tomlinson were among the acts to be honoured at the first-ever Northern Music Awards.The inaugural ceremony – hosted by the UK’s largest music therapy charity, Nordoff And Robbins – took place at the Albert Hall in Manchester last night (April 23) to celebrate northern artists, festivals, venues and industry figures.Presented by BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Chris Hawkins, the event featured live performances from Courteeners frontman Liam Fray, as well as English Teacher, Lisa Stansfield, The K’s and more.Guest presenters from the region included former Manchester United footballer Gary Neville, New Order‘s Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Norris, and Grimsby-born actor Thomas Turgoose (This Is England). ‌ Neville awarded Courteeners with the Band Of The Year prize. Responding to the nod, Fray said: “It’s really nice to be in a room with this much talent… but this isn’t about us, it’s about Nordoff And Robbins and the work that they do, it’s about music, and the way they’re changing lives with music and sometimes even saving lives with music.”The singer also delivered an acoustic rendition of Courteeners’ classic single ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ and a cover of Oasis‘ ‘The Masterplan’.Rising Leeds band English Teacher picked up the Best Newcomer award, and performed ‘Albatross’ and ‘Albert Road’ from their acclaimed debut album ‘This Could Be Texas’ (watch the video below)..@Englishteac_her commanding the stage with the first song off their album.

Liam Gallagher & Friends huge line-up announced for Malta Weekender
Liam Gallagher & Friends: Malta Weekender, a four-day festival on the island in September.The festival was first announced yesterday (February 22), and will take place between September 19 and 22, with the former Oasis frontman delivering a headline performance.Now, it has been confirmed that other acts playing the weekender include Liam Fray, Blossoms, Jake Bugg, The View, The Lathums, Jamie Webster, The Royston Club and The Ks.A post shared by Liam Gallagher (@liamgallagher)Also, the opening night will feature a special Hacienda Takeover, which will see an array of DJs summon the acid house spirit, including Inner City, A Guy Called Gerald, Kevin Saunderson and David Morales.The festival will also see sets from The Mary Wallopers, Picture Parlour, Villanelle and Sofy, with more names expected to be announced in due course.Tickets go on general sale at 10am GMT next Friday (March 1), with hotel packages and payment plans available – you’ll be able to buy yours here. Alternatively, fans can sign up to get early access to tickets at the same time next Tuesday (February 27) – you can do so here.Beyond the live sets, the weekender will play host to club nights, pool parties and boat parties over the four days and four nights.

Courteeners played the relaunch of Club NME with Ladbrokes Live this weekend (September 15) in London.The Manchester band performed a career-spanning greatest hits set at London’s EartH, followed by a surprise DJ guest set from The Libertines’ Carl Barat and Gary Powell to close the evening alongside DJ Rowena.Tickets were free to punters who queued around the street to guarantee entry, reintroducing the classic indie disco night that first launched in 2005 and became a staple of the club scene from London to Sao Paulo and beyond.Taking to the stage for their first London show since March, Courteeners launched into cuts from 2013 album ‘Anna’ including ‘Are You In Love With A Notion?’ alongside classic ‘St Jude’ hits like ‘Cavorting’ and more.The band played fan favourite ‘Sycophant’ from 2010’s ‘Falcon’, a song that frontman Liam Fray admitted he’d not “sung that one for a long time”. A rowdy crowd that had travelled from across the country climbed on shoulders for ‘The 17th’ from ‘Mapping The Rendezvous’, and ‘St Jude’s ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ and ‘What Took You So Long?’The Libertines’ Barat and Powell joined for a secret DJ set, which included mash-ups of The Killers and Gorillaz, alongside hits from Beastie Boys and more in a vibrant set.Speaking to NME prior to the show, Courteeners’ Liam Fray commented on their upcoming music.
