Beck, Animal Collective and Jeff Tweedy are among the artists that will appear on a new birdsong-inspired compilation album.‘For The Birds: The Birdsong Project’ is set to be released in five monthly stages between now and September, with the first volume arriving yesterday (May 20).Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, Karen O, Kamasi Washington, Terry Riley, Mary Lattimore, Tyondai Braxton, and Elvis Costello are among the other artists that feature on the expansive compilation.Costello said of the project: “This should be so very obvious: without birds we would be knee-deep in worms, swarmed by bugs, the trees bereft of song. The least we can do is raise our voices in praise or lament.”In addition to the musical selections, the project also includes spoken-word pieces from the likes of Florence Welch, Matthew McConaughey, Bette Midler, and Natasha Lyonne. Randall Poster produced the entire collection, with Lee Ranaldo serving as one of the set’s executive producers.All proceeds from ‘For The Birds: The Birdsong Project’ will be donated to the National Audubon Society.Listen to the first volume of ‘The Birdsong Project’ below:The project will be also be released in a massive vinyl set, spread across 20 LPs.

Sonic Youth have announced the release of a live album from their final North American show that took place in New York City.The album titled ‘Live in Brooklyn 2011’ captures Sonic Youth’s full 17-song set from their August 2011 show at the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn. The New York natives played in front of the Manhattan skyline after Kurt Vile and Wild Flag served as openers.Sonic Youth’s final hometown show was released during COVID lockdown on Bandcamp but is now getting a proper release as a remixed and remastered live album.“The stage was facing the East River from the Williamsburg, Brooklyn, waterfront, and I recall the sun going down in the west during our set,” Lee Ranaldo, the band’s guitarist, said of the concert in a statement.

The Cribs have debuted new track ‘I Don’t Know Who I Am’, which sees the Wakefield trio joining forces with Sonic Youth‘s Lee Ranaldo.The latest track to emerge from their forthcoming eighth album ‘Night Network’, was recorded at Dave Grohl’s 606 Studios in Los Angeles before Ranaldo layered his guitar over the top at his own studios in Hoboken, New York.Describing the melancholic new track, they said: “‘I Don’t Know Who I Am’ (although ultimately quite different) came together in much the same way as Be Safe did back in 2006 – we had a recording of a long, improvised noise-jam which we then tried to refine into a more cohesive song structure.“Due to the similarities in the writing process, it made us think of Lee again…we had initially
