Based on the best-selling book by Ian Rankin, Rebus bursts onto the BBC this weekend when Edinburgh detective John Rebus finds himself at a psychological crossroads after a violent encounter with gangster Ger Cafferty.The BBC's synopsis for the series reads: "At odds with a job increasingly driven by corporate technocrats, involved in a toxic affair he knows he needs to end, and all but supplanted in his daughter’s life by his ex-wife’s wealthy new husband, Rebus begins to wonder if he still has a role to play – either as a family man or a police officer. "In a time of divisive politics and national discord, Rebus’ broke, ex-soldier brother Michael desperately crosses the line to provide for his family, and Rebus begins to wonder if the law still has meaning, or if everyone is reverting to an older set of rules? Richard Rankin is currently appearing as DS John Rebus in the BBC TV adaptation of Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus novels, and has spoken out about the moment that changed his life and career and led to him winning such an iconic role. The Scottish actor found everything changed for him when he accepted the part in 2015 of Roger Wakefield in Outlander, the hugely successful period fantasy drama that also stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe.

Crime writer Sir Ian Rankin said it was “absolutely thrilling” to be honoured with a knighthood at Buckingham Palace. Sir Ian, creator of Detective Inspector John Rebus and winner of several national and international awards, was knighted for services to literature and charity on Tuesday.

K.J. Yossman Viaplay’s first U.K. drama commission, “Rebus,” has gone into production in Scotland. The show has also added some new cast members including “Line of Duty’s” Lucie Shorthouse, Brian Ferguson (“The Ipcress File”) and Stuart Bowman (“The Serpent”). They will join Richard Rankin (“Outlander”) as John Rebus, the much-loved character John Rebus from Ian Rankin’s bestselling novels. “Rebus” tells the story of a Scottish police detective who “finds himself at a psychological crossroads,” according to the logline. “At odds with a job increasingly driven by corporate technocrats, involved in a toxic affair he knows he needs to end, and all but supplanted in his daughter’s life by his ex-wife’s wealthy new husband, Rebus begins to wonder if he still has a role to play – either as a family man or a police officer.
