ABC is entering the 2021-22 season as only one of two broadcast networks with live-action comedies on the fall schedule.

Paging Dr. Meredith Grey to ABC’s fall primetime lineup! Morewitz had been with ABC for almost 17 years, and had been in his most recent position since March 2016, when he was promoted by then-entertainment president Channing Dungey.There’s no word yet on how Morewitz will be replaced, or who will assume his drama duties.

The news comes just as IMDB TV has announced that it has struck a deal to stream Seasons 1 and 2 of the series on its ad-supported platform.Series executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson was said to be instrumental in reviving the series, working with top leadership at Disney, like Hulu-ABC chief Craig Erwich, to find the show a new home.

While fans may be saying goodbye to  after the upcoming eighth season, it doesn't mean that we've seen the last of the  universe.On Tuesday, a few days after ABC renewed the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated sitcom for an eighth and final season, ABC and Hulu head Craig Erwich revealed the status of two Kenya Barris projects for the network. Earlier this week, ABC made the shocking announcement that they would not be renewing drama series Rebel for a second season.

The first two broadcast networks to unveil their 2021-22 schedules, Fox and NBC, had one thing in common, neither featured live-action comedies in the fall.

ABC last week canceled four series, ranging from veteran American Housewife, which had run for five seasons, to rookie Rebel, whose cancellation came after only five airings. In-between them were sophomores Mixed-ish and For Life.

The Bachelor was conspicuously absent from ABC’s 2021/22 schedule or the bumper list of reality shows that it recently renewed ahead of today’s upfronts.

ABC believes that its year-round development cycle will mean that it can give creators of pilots such as Kevin Costner’s National Parks and Epic from Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis a better shot of landing on the schedule.

It came down to the wire for three long-running ABC series that had been rumored to potentially be nearing the end their runs, Grey’s Anatomy, The Goldbergs and black-ish. All were ultimately renewed for next season, black-ish for an eighth and final installment. The upcoming seasons of Grey’s Anatomy and The Goldbergs were not announced as final chapters, and Craig Erwich, President, ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, this morning said that “we will take Grey’s Anatomy for as long as we can,” an indication that the network would like to go beyond the upcoming eighteenth season.
