FREE newsletter is as good as that first pint back at the pubA patient has been infected with a rare brain-eating amoeba.The Florida Department of Health said one patient in Hillsborough County, the US, has been infected with the deadly water-borne amoeba – Naegleria fowleri.According to experts, the amoeba infects the brain in a process called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) – that destroys tissue.Being infected with the amoeba is usually fatal.A spokesman for the health department said: “Infections can happen when contaminated water enters the body through the nose.”He added: “Infections usually occur when temperatures increase for prolonged periods of time, which results in higher water temperatures and lower water levels.”Peak.
