Fears have been raised that Cheshire's proposed Tebay-style M56 service station will divert trade away from "struggling" shopping centres in surrounding towns and suburbs as it is likely to become "a destination in its own right".
The concerns have been outlined in a recent letter of objection lodged with Cheshire East Council by the Bowdon Conservation Group, an organisation with more than 300 members.
It argues that the plans - due to be ruled on by councillors on September 20 - would cause unjustifiable "harm" to the Green Belt as well as the neighbouring communities of Hale, Altrincham and Bowdon.
The objection comes as the proposed development was handed a significant boost earlier this month after receiving the backing of the highways department, which ruled that the "traffic and transport impacts" could be "satisfactorily assimilated into the highway network".
