Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer The second season of “Squid Game” launches Thursday and Netflix is doing everything in its power to get viewers to start watching as soon as the episodes drop — including offering free in-game rewards for the TV series’ new companion mobile game, “Squid Game: Unleashed,” for each episode you binge.
Released Dec. 17, “Squid Game: Unleashed” features “fast, heart-pounding action and brutal competition” in a 32-player online battle royale game that lets you play in games inspired by the series.
The streamer has made this game free for even non-Netflix subscribers, marking a first for the company’s gaming strategy. Netflix says it’s implementing this strategy with “Squid Game: Unleashed” to test out the power of combining its massive TV fandom with its fledgling mobile games business to amplify both aspects of its subscription offering.
Amid the reignited interest existing video games have seen recently when the IP is adapted into TV shows, like HBO’s “The Last of Us” and Amazon’s “Fallout,” Netflix is ready to gauge consumer appetite and response when a new season of a TV series and a game based on that series come out on the same service at the same time and offer fans incentives for engaging with both offerings simultaneously.
