Chris Matthews is admitting to behavior. The former MSNBC Hardball host spoke out for the first time since retiring amid sexual harassment allegations in an interview with Vanity Fair.

In the interview, he said he was “inappropriate” and found the accuser’s story “very credible.” “I didn’t argue about it, I didn’t deny it,” he said of journalist Laura Bassett‘s claims. “I accepted the credibility of the complaint in the article.

I didn’t want to challenge the person that made the complaint and wrote the article. I thought it was very credible and certainly within the person’s rights to write that article, of course.
