Benefits bosses say they are aware of “a minority” of people trying to make fraudulent claims during the pandemic. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has promised to prosecute “anyone attempting to exploit the current emergency”.
They say staff are analysing figures and it’s currently too soon to determine if there has been an increase in fraudulent claims since lockdown began.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to turn to Universal Credit (UC) after losing jobs or having their hours cut as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak told Parliament on Monday (April 27) that more than 1.5 million new Universal Credit claims have now been made.
