More than 8,000 roles have been axed less than 24 hours after Chancellor Rishi Sunak unveiled a so-called 'jobs' Budget to save millions of workers from redundancy, amid one of the worst recessions in history.

Sunak's £30billion pledge to save the high street included 50% off discounts for diners and a VAT cut, but the Treasury snubbed a £500 voucher 'lifeline' for the shopping industry.

Now, as employers brace for the biggest furlough change yet, roles are being axed in their thousands - with even the fast-food sector to take a hit, despite a 75% VAT cut.
