Ministers are under pressure to keep up COVID-level support for rough sleepers, as experts warned official figures were the "tip of the iceberg.

The official Annual Rough Sleeping Count 2020 today recorded 2,688 people as being forced to sleep on the streets, a fall of 37 per cent on the previous year.

It's the third consecutive annual fall, but it remains 52% higher than the number estimated in 2010, when the "snapshot" approach was first introduced.

Councils said the fall was due to the Government's Everyone In scheme, where councils were instructed to rapidly rehouse thousands of rough sleepers at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Rough Sleeping Initiative which launched in 2018.
