The immediate future of Metrolink has been secured thanks to an £11.6m government bailout. But the backdated emergency cash injection is only for twelve weeks and will run out in June.
Greater Manchester's tram network is currently losing about £5.5m every month because of the coronavirus lockdown, prompting fears from Mayor Andy Burnham that the entire system could be 'mothballed' without government intervention.
Today (Saturday) Transport Secretary Grant Shapps made good on a promise made last month to help help Metrolink by announcing funding worth £11.6m.
