More than half the care homes reporting to Greater Manchester’s health system are now flagging Covid cases, the mayor has revealed - as he warned government not to ease the lockdown ‘prematurely’.
Andy Burnham said local data suggested the virus was still spreading through the conurbation’s residential homes, raising concerns over plans to start lifting restrictions at the start of next week.
The region now has an ‘early warning system’ for the care sector, designed to flag concerns over infections, deaths, PPE and staffing shortages.
In total, it has 504 out of the region’s 565 homes feeding in data, allowing leaders to get a comprehensive picture of outbreaks.
