Andy Burnham says schools in Greater Manchester should only re-open when it’s safe to do so. The region’s mayor says the coronavirus reproduction rate is much higher in the north than it in the south of the country and so there are "concerns" about the speed of school reopenings.
He has called on the government to officially release the Covid-19 reproduction rate - the ‘R’ value - for each region to ‘empower people with information’.
Mr Burnham - a father himself - admitted that home schooling was ‘a challenge’ and said the current closures will have a big impact on young people.
