Thomas Frake became the 16th amateur to lift the MasterChef trophy last night after almost making judge John Torode weep with joy over his classic grub.
Frake, from London’s East End, beat off stiff competition from finalists technology consultant Sandy Tang and digital security manager David Rickett to take the title.
The banker, 32, won after wowing the judges with his three-course menu of monkfish scampi followed by ox cheek in beer with a dessert of salted caramel custard tart.
An emotional Torode declared: “It’s not fine dining, it’s not fancy plates,but this dish to me, is an example of someone who understands how to get the best out of every single ingredient, with real style.
