Caroline Framke Chief TV CriticFour years after the last episode of “Master of None,” a new season will premiere and feel nothing like the show that preceded it.When Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang’s series first debuted in 2015, it was one of Netflix’s early critical successes and an early indication of how storytelling on the streaming platform could be distinctive from broadcast and cable offerings. “Master of None” told the overarching story of Dev (Ansari), a B-list actor with expensive taste falling in love throughout New York City, with several self-contained narratives that were immediate standouts.

The new season of Master of None drops on Netflix on May 23 and it may not be the comedy that you are used to seeing — and that’s a good thing.

“The Chi to me is a family,” says Lena Waithe, creator and executive producer of the Showtime series set in Chicago’s South Side. “It’s about a family, about a community, and the thing that I always press us to do things that other shows may be afraid to do and to talk about things that other shows may not really want to tackle.”

It’s been a minute since audiences were treated to a new season of Netflix’s Emmy-winning Master of None created by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang. Netflix said last month that it will finally debut a third season of the comedy May 23 — though it may not be something fans of the series would expect. In fact, it might go beyond expectations.
