Millions of people could be overpaying on council tax because of a major flaw in the bands system, Martin Lewis has warned. The money expert said as many as 400,000 homes are currently trapped on the wrong band, while thousands more people are unaware they qualify for a discount.
In one case, a 63-year-old woman received a £3,500 refund after discovering her property was under the wrong bracket. In another, a student discovered she was exempt - resulting in a £2,600 refund, while the council cleared her existing balance, too.
