Manchester wants to be the first-ever European Capital of Cycling next year

The authority has submitted a bid to ACES Europe, which it says is ‘the culmination of years of work’ that includes ‘a hugely ambitious expansion of cycling in both Manchester as well as the entire Greater Manchester region’.
Council chiefs also hope the bid will put the city ‘ in an even better position to bid for future funding’. Later this month, a delegation from ACES will visit the city, in what is shaping up to be a pedal-powered September.
As well as that visit, the Tour of Britain starts in Greater Manchester on Sunday (September 3), and the National Cycling Centre reopens after a two-year renovation. If we seize this opportunity I am certain we will be able to deliver lasting change to our communities.” A stated aim of the council’s transport strategy is to double cycling by the end of 2028 and for two-wheels to be the default choice for short journeys in the city.
