The Manchester Evening News understands a move for Varane is 'progressing slowly' as United aim to recruit a centre-back this summer.
United have already tried to sign Varane, 28, in a proposed £50million package that was rebuffed by Madrid, who are holding out for an £80million fee even though Varane is out of contract next year.
The MEN reported in March Madrid are prepared to sell Varane to United in order to obtain a fee this year and United are confident of negotiating Madrid's valuation down.
