Paul Merson has reiterated his belief that Manchester United are a better team without Cristiano Ronaldo. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner completed a shock return to Old Trafford on deadline day in August, 12 years after leaving for Real Madrid.
Ronaldo celebrated his comeback with a brace against Newcastle United on his second debut and has added a further seven goals since in a struggling United side, most notably crucial late goals against Atalanta twice and Villarreal.
However, Merson believes Ronaldo's presence has made the whole team a less threatening presence, pointing to the recent "embarrassing" home defeat to cross-city rivals Manchester City.
