Manchester United reportedly had a £70m bid rejected by Napoli two years ago for defender Kalidou Koulibaly. It was during Jose Mourinho’s tenure that saw the Portuguese boss desperately looking for defensive reinforcements.

United were linked with a host of big-money targets, including Napoli’s Koulibaly. The Red Devils were ready to splash the cash, and according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, United offered £70m for Koulibaly.

Napoli played hardball though and rejected the offer as they refused to part with their star man. That fee would have made Koulibaly the most expensive defender in history at the time and United have since given captain Harry Maguire that title after forking out £80m for him.
