The story behind King George III’s pocket watch, up for auction at Sotheby’s with an estimate of £1m
The Madness of George III, is the primary image of a much maligned King of England (r.1760-1820). However, what is all but bypassed in Bennett’s fictionalised study is the fact that, before he was struck down with an unidentified mental illness in his later years, George was a committed patron of both the arts and sciences. As well as signing the charter that established the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768, George had a passion for agriculture and was the first British royal to receive a formal education in science.
