Joe Gomez says he looked up to fellow south east London boy Rio Ferdinand when he was a youngster. Liverpool centre-back Gomez, who was born in Catford, stands on the verge of emulating Peckham boy Ferdinand in becoming a Premier League winner when the season resumes.
Gomez was just five when Ferdinand made his record move from Leeds to Manchester United in 2002, but by the time the 81-times capped England international left for Queens Park Rangers 12 years later, Gomez was on the verge of making his professional debut with Charlton Athletic.
A £3.5million move to Liverpool followed a year later, and having overcome injury issues Gomez is now established as Virgil van Dijk's first-choice partner at the back for the Reds.
