Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona are inextricably linked, as two of the greatest players to ever grace a football pitch – and remarkably they once did just that together.Maradona retired from professional football in 1997, when Messi was aged just 10 and was still learning to play the game with Newell’s Old Boys.
The icon of Argentinian football had left an indelible mark on the game over a dazzling career – and it was to be a mantle taken up by Messi many years later. The two geniuses crossed paths when Maradona became manager of Argentina between 2008 and 2010, when Messi was at the height of his powers with Barcelona.
But, in fact, the duo had already played together on the same pitch three years prior to that. The meeting of minds came in an all-star charity match in Argentina in 2005 when Messi was just 18 and Maradona was 45.
Amazing YouTube footage shows the two playing in a match which also featured other Argentine stars like Juan Riquelme, Diego Simeone, Marcelo Gallardo, Sergio Aguero and Juan Sebastian Veron.
