The 54-year-old was admitted to hospital after contracting coronavirus last March and was soon placed into an induced coma. Derek suffered major complications as a result, suffering a rare brain inflammation and the virus also attacked his lungs, heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas.
He spent more than a year in hospital but returned home to be with Kate and the couple's two children in April where he receives around-the-clock care.
