New declassified FBI photos from the Jonestown Massacre have laid bare the horrific scenes which greeted first responders who arrived at the scene of a bloodbath.
On November 18, 1978, US cult leader Jim Jones ordered his followers to kill themselves by drinking flavoured drink mixed with cyanide.
In total, 918 people - including Jones - died in the nightmarish events at the Jonestown compound set up in Guyana. It was the biggest single loss of American life until the September 11 attacks in 2001 more than two decades later.
Now, first responders have spoken out about what happened when they arrived at the compound. David Netterville at the time was a young combat controller stationed at Howard Air Force Base in Panama.
