Smile, out today. It's a somber song on an album that is, in part, a return to form for Perry. She defined early with her candy-pop aesthetic—please see: the music video for —and it was the perfect sound for a recession-era America looking to escape.
Perry recaptures some of that sugary-sweet optimism on Smile, with songs like “Not the End of the World" and “Harleys in Hawaii” that offer light messaging and even lighter tempos. (“Throw on your fancy attire, fears in the fire,” she exclaims on “End of the World.” It feels like the peppy, younger sister of “Firework.”)Of course, it can’t all be gumdrops and lollipops anymore.
