Hurricane Laura is hurtling towards the US amid warnings it could cause an 'unsurvivable storm surge', resulting in catastrophic damage.

The tempest reached speeds of up to 140mph as it neared the Gulf Coast earlier today, with the Category 4 storm set to hit Texas and Louisiana this evening.

Some 620,000 people have been told to evacuate in the two states and a forecaster has predicted a 'wall of water over two storeys high' sweeping ashore.
