A 18-tonne module from China’s giant Long March 5B rocket crashed back to earth just after 4:30 pm UK time on Monday – the biggest object to make an uncontrolled return to Earth since the 39 tonne Salyut-7 in 1991.
The titanic 176-foot-tall Long March 5B is a new, more compact variant version of the Long March 5 launcher, China’s most powerful rocket.
The Long March is at the core of China’s renewed space programme, which includes an orbiting space station as well as a permanent moon base.
The spacecraft was launched from the Wenchang Space Launch Centre in China's Hainan province on May 5 and spent several days in orbit before falling back to Earth.
