As the seconds counted down to the Space Shuttle Challenger's launch on January 28, 1986, millions of people were glued to their televisions.

Not only was a rocket launch a major event, the rocket contained a very special passenger, Christa McAuiffe. The 37-year-old was to become the first teacher in space after being selected from more than 11,000 applicants to the NASA programme - but just 73 seconds into its flight, Challenger erupted in a ball of flame, killing all seven of the crew on board.
