Drivers could face a fee of up to £500 and receive penalty points if they ignore child safety warnings, according to the updated Highway Code.

The fixed penalty for a driver or passenger failing to wear a seat belt is a £100 fine, although if the case is taken to court, fines could increase to £500.

Motorists could also face civil proceedings for damages, if, for example, they failed to safely carry someone else's child. As well as the legal penalties, failure to wear a seat belt or ensure that a child passenger uses an appropriate child car seat or wears a seat belt could affect any claims against motor insurance cover.

But this is all easily avoidable if drivers are willing to take adequate and appropriate measures. Experts at CarMats.co.uk have urged parents to make their children a priority by following the laws surrounding child car seats.
