Gavin Williamson’s political career has been a litany of gaffes and blunders. He cemented his oddball reputation while serving as Tory chief whip by keeping his pet tarantula, Cronus, in his Westminster office.
Later, he used a party conference speech to warn unruly MPs that he took a “carrot and stick” approach to discipline in the Commons.
In a deeply weird moment, he added: “I don't very much believe in the stick, but it's amazing what can be achieved with a sharpened carrot.” As education secretary he presided over last year’s (2020) A-level results fiasco, after summer exams were cancelled following school closures.
