Lineker and Gascoigne were key members of England's iconic Italia 90 World Cup side, knocked out on penalties in the semi-final against West Germany, as well as team-mates at Tottenham.
The pair have remained in contact despite taking different paths since their careers came to an end. Lineker says the charismatic Geordie was in "good form" when they last talked on the phone about a month ago - after Gascoigne decided to get in touch to tell him he had fallen down his stairs and hurt his thumb.
