A peer has sparked bafflement and fury after calling incoming Vice President Kamala Harris ‘The Indian’ instead of using her name.
The House of Lords faces demands to act against Lord Kilclooney, a former deputy leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, after the act was branded “dark ages”-level racism.
He claimed his remark wasn’t racist and failed to apologise today. He also claimed he didn't know her name at the time. But Lord Speaker Norman Fowler tweeted: "Lord Kilclooney should retract and apologise.
This is an offensive way to refer to anyone, let alone a woman who has just made history. The comment is entirely unacceptable and has no place in British politics.
