Barcelona forward Luis Suarez is helping out 500 families in his native Uruguay during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The former Liverpool star reached out to the authorities back home after the outbreak forced the government to close all schools in a bid to stop the spread of the deadly virus.

Thousands of children form the poorest families in Uruguay are forced to rely on free school meals but with the schools no longer open, Suarez has stepped in to help.

The 33-year-old is paying for supplies, including basic food and cleaning products, to be delivered to around 500 families in the deprived area of Casavalle in northern Montevideo.
