Fraud and error in the benefit system hit its highest ever level just before coronavirus struck. The DWP estimates it overpaid £4.6bn and underpaid £2bn in benefits due to fraud or error - either by claimants or the government itself - in 2019/20.
The National Audit Office said in a new analysis this week: “This is the highest-ever recorded level of fraud and error in DWP’s benefits.” The audit watchdog called for the DWP to set annual targets to reduce the toll to the taxpayer.
Overpayments were 2.4% of benefit spending, beating the record of 2.2% the previous year. And underpayments were 1.1%, equalling the record.
