An engineer says he's found the cheapest way of boiling water, and was surprised by the results. As part of an experiment posted on TikTok, dinosaurdannyx boiled two litres of room temperature water with a kettle and on the hob.

He recorded how much energy was used, and how much it would cost using both methods, the Mirror reports. He said that although kettles use less energy overall, the differing prices of electricity and gas meant the hob worked out cheaper. "If you're looking for an energy saving, go for the electric kettle," he said. "If you're looking for a cost saving, go for the hob." "The results of this actually surprised me," he said.

A study by energy supplier Utilita and supermarket Iceland has also revealed the prices of different cooking methods, based on the average amount of time each appliance is used for per day, as the cost of living crisis continues.

Electric cookers can cost up to £316.54 a year to run, while in comparison microwaves can cost around £30.02 annually. Other common kitchen appliances which were part of the study included the gas cooker, which costs around £120.83 a year, and the part-electric, part-gas dual cooker, costing or £264.03 annually, while an air fryer was said to cost £52.74 over a 12 month period.
