Lakeside Shopping Centre, in Grays, Essex, was also deserted today, despite Christmas being just days away. The eerie photographs are in stark contrast to pictures of packed high streets in other parts of the country.
London, parts of the south-east and east of England were placed under strict Tier 4 restrictions last night, scuppering plans to buy last-minute Christmas gifts at retail stores.
