Long-awaited benefit changes for the terminally ill are finally coming soon, the government said today. DWP minister Justin Tomlinson promised an announcement "shortly" - almost exactly a year after a review of the system began.
But his promise comes too late for thousands who may have died waiting for reform. The Special Rules for Terminal Illness say people can have a benefit claim fast-tracked - if a GP agrees they are likely to die within six months.
But charities say the six-month rule is unworkable and “insensitive” because it forces people to "prove that they have six months left to live".
Ex-Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd promised in July 2019 to review the rules, highlighting the pain of losing ex-husband AA Gill to cancer.
